Functional Harmony

Or: How I Finally Understood Music

The 51st International Bamboo Organ Festival is coming up this February — in my opinion, one of the top classical music events in Manila every year. The venue is historical, the performers are always top-notch, and this year is extra special: my wife Phoebe’s choir, the Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club, is part of the concert.

Conducting is Eudenice Palaruan — Phoebe’s mentor, and my music theory teacher at UP College of Music. He’s now based in Singapore as the Choral Director of the Singapore Symphony Chorus, but he’s coming home for this.

I studied theory under Palaruan at UP College of Music, and it was only in his class that I started really understanding music. He’s an incredible mentor — and the most humble man I know.

(Thank you for functional harmony, Sir Eudy. It changed my life.)
